The TSA Took My Dry Shampoo: Smart Packing for Real-Life Travelers

Learn from my loss and pack like a pro—without sacrificing your style, sanity, or shampoo.
We’ve all been there. You carefully plan your carry-on, squeeze your liquids into that tiny plastic bag, and then—bam. Your beloved dry shampoo gets flagged at security like it’s a national threat. Just like that, poof, it’s gone. TSA: 1, Traveler: 0.
But here's the good news. Packing smarter doesn’t mean packing less fun—it just means outsmarting airport security and avoiding those frustrating little heartbreaks at the checkpoint.
Let’s talk smart, stylish, TSA-proof packing.
1. Understand the 3-1-1 Rule
This is the cornerstone of carry-on survival.
3.4 ounces (100ml) or less per container
1 quart-sized, clear, resealable bag
1 bag per passenger
Yes, even if your skincare routine has a 12-step system. Yes, even if your dry shampoo is “travel-sized” but still over 3.4 ounces.
Tip: Aerosol cans—like dry shampoo, deodorant, and hairspray—must be 3.4 oz or less and must fit inside your quart bag with everything else.
2. Swap Liquids for Solids
One of the best ways to beat the baggie is to ditch liquids altogether. Solid toiletries are your secret weapon.
Solid shampoo and conditioner bars
Toothpaste tablets
Lotion sticks
Powdered dry shampoo (They can’t take what isn’t aerosol)
Bar soap instead of body wash
Not only are these TSA-friendly, but they also free up room for more important things. Like snacks. Or that second pair of sunglasses you know you don’t need but are definitely bringing.
3. Go Mini or Go Home
Invest in a set of good refillable bottles and fill them with your favorite products. Just make sure they’re labeled (TSA agents aren’t big fans of mystery goop).
Also, beware of “travel-size” labels in stores. Some are sneaky and still over 3.4 oz. Always check the actual volume before tossing it in your bag.
4. Pack With a Plan
If it’s not in the quart-size bag, it needs to be solid, checked, or left behind.
Keep your liquids bag near the top of your carry-on for easy access.
Wrap any messy or spill-prone containers in plastic wrap or use a leakproof travel pouch.
Know your must-haves. Will your hotel have shampoo? Can you live without a face mist for four days? Prioritize and simplify.
5. Double-Check the "Surprising Banned List"
TSA has an odd sense of danger. Things you might think are innocent can get confiscated:
Snow globes (they're liquid in disguise)
Peanut butter (yes, it counts as a liquid)
Gel insoles
Disposable lighters (limited to one, no refills allowed)
When in doubt, check the TSA’s "What Can I Bring?" tool.
Final Thoughts from a Dry Shampoo Survivor
I’m still mourning the loss of that perfect volume-boosting mist. But hey, now I pack smarter. And you can too.
So next time you're prepping for takeoff, don’t just pack light—pack smart. Because nothing ruins a travel day faster than watching your favorite product get tossed in the bin while you stand there, defeated, holding your sad little Ziploc bag.
